‘It’s cold. Cuddle me.’

‘It went up like a rocket.’

‘The colours are beautiful.’

‘Don’t like that smell.’

‘Look at the flame licking the window.’

‘I told her to get the boiler serviced.’

    • Thanks, Sandra. I had a number of false starts until my mum-in-law phoned to say the gas fire wouldn’t light, and then my imagination got the better of me. I hasten to add, I did not put my mother-in-law in the house in the story.

  6. I can see them standing outside with blankets around their shoulders. Can feel the sadness still in shock, maybe.
